Are Marriott Bonvoy Points Worth Buying?
Everyone has their reason for buying hotel points. I usually don’t buy points until I’m sure I’m using them soon. Also, there could be limited opportunities to use points. Usually, you will use points where the cost to buy points, including after the bonus offer, is lower than the cost of paying for the room.
This offer allows you to buy Marriott Points at 0.89 cents or ₹ 0.79 per point. At the same time, I value Marriott Points at ₹ 0.6 or 0.67¢. So, Marriott points are a bit pricey, but in a range where you can play with a choice of properties and the number of nights to get this value. And, if you’re buying, ensure these are for immediate consumption or soon.
Transfer to Airlines
One of the reasons for buying Marriott points can be to transfer them to your preferred airlines, as it can be cheaper to buy Marriott Points and transfer them than to buy miles directly from the airlines:
- No Bonus Airlines (American, Delta, Avianca): ₹ 2.38 per mile or 2.68¢
- 5K Bonus Airlines: ₹ 1.96 per mile or 2.21¢ per mile
- United Airlines 10K Bonus: ₹ 1.66 or 1.88¢ per mile
Pro Tip: United Airlines is offering a 30% bonus on transferring hotel points, so your cost per mile will come down further. For example, if you buy 172K Marriott points, you will get a total of 240800 Marriott Points. When these points are transferred to United, you will receive 80K base miles, 40K bonus miles (10K for every 60K points transferred), and an additional 25% bonus miles (20K), totalling 140K miles. So, you effectively purchased 140K miles for $ 2,150, or $1.54 per mile. Even at a 100% bonus United miles, it costs $1.88 per mile.
How to make the most of this offer?
If you have decided to buy points, using them for a 5-night stay will give you a good value per point since Marriott offers 5th nights free. You can also use the Marriott Tool to find the best value for your points.

Bottomline
Buying Marriott Bonvoy Points while bonus offers are available is a good deal if you know your stay plans. With the offer, the cost to buy Marriott points is ₹ 0.79 or 0.89¢ per point, which is more than the usual ₹ 0.6 or 0.67¢ value per point. Buying may not make sense until your bonus offer is around 50%. I would, however, recommend a specific stay plan so you can save on your next travel adventure instead of locking up your money for points you might not need.
